Once you have selected a mounting location, you can run the four wires that operate the tachometer. The tachometer is designed to show the engine RPMs or rotations per minute. Autometer has designed their tach to be used with four, six and eight cylinder engines with the only requirement being that you must calibrate the tachometer during the installation process. If you have a four cylinder engine, clip the two looped wires on the back of the tachometer with wire cutters.
For a six cylinder engine, clip just the brown wire, and for an eight cylinder engine do not clip either of the wires. Select an open switched power source in the fuse box to connect the red wire to. Most fuse boxes have several positions in the fuse box that will allow you to connect a wire to them using a spade connect. Check your owner’s manual for a key that indicates what is available in the fuse box. Crimp the connector onto the wire with a pair of crimping pliers and insert the connector into the slot you selected in the fuse box.
Connect the white wire to this wire using a crimp-on wire tap. Close the two halves of the connector around the white wire and the instrument light wire. Squeeze the metal tap on the connector down with a pair of pliers and snap the cover on the connector closed. Run the black wire to the negative side of the battery.

By Tom Bobolts March 18, Article by: They offer a great platform to build engines whether you are running 8s, or 12s. We decided to come up with the basics on what it takes to swap an LS engine into an older vehicle not originally designed to accept it. Most of these have to be done for those running higher end classes, but we wanted to make sure we covered it all. Where To Begin The first question to ask yourself is where can I find the drivetrain? You have a few options here, all with their own pros and cons.
Factory Crate Engine A quick call to any local or online GM dealer such as SDparts can offer any factory crate engine delivered to your door at the click of a button. GM Performance Parts also offers a number of engines available in short, long, or complete engines. These factory crate engines mirror the engines they are centered around, but they also include everything you need to operate the engine including the computer, wiring harness, and emission devices.
Now before you laugh at the last item on that list, remember that this kit is the only engine package that is CARB certified to be installed into any emissions controlled vehicle, even if you live in the Golden State.

C , black C , blue C , black, 3 wires. Some of the wires inside these links are made BOLD. This typically means this wire is needed or very useful in a stand alone harness setup. C2 information is in these links. Info is more complete for , Later years should be similar, use circuit ‘s to compair.
Remove that large 16mm plug from the front driver-side of the block and use a short length of 3/8-inch rubber hose and a funnel to pour a few ounces of engine oil into this passage.
The first three entries came from a recent issue of “Street Rodder” magazine, and are reasonably accurate, except for the weights. Without knowing precisely what ancillaries are included, a real comparison can’t be made for weights. Length can vary tremendously by the choice of water pump and pulleys, and height will depend on the intake set-up.
The fourth entry was obtained by subtracting the weight savings of aluminum heads from the third entry. The last three entries came from my own measurements, and are very precise. The weights given include everything required to make the engine work – starter, alternator, flywheel, clutch, intake, carburetors, exhaust, distributor – everything except oil and water! In this trim, the weight for the Ford in entry two becomes pounds, from actual measurement!
LSX Swap Guide, The Basics
Installation Instructions A tachometer is a good addition to any vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. Installation of the Autogage Tachometer was fairly simple with only minor wiring including a wire to the distributor, a good ground, a 12 volt switched power source and a wire to power the tach’s light. The following write-up is an overview of the installation I followed and includes a few illustrations from the installation guide provided from Autogage.
To change the tach to operate on 4 or 6 cylinder engines, a pair of dip switches are located within the tach to make the adjustment.
It’s been quite interesting for me to read over these old updates, and in hindsight, I was so unbelievably optimistic about getting the car on the road quickly and how, at every step of the way, I was convinced that we were “close”!
The FI version has a blind hole near intake 3 for the temp sensor II. If you use this head as part of your engine project you don’t have to worry about the hole because it’s blind. If you have the head from the 74 bus, then you’ll notice two holes on either side of the intakes. These are not breather openings to vent pressure from behind the valve cover. They are air injection holes to allow oxygen to be introduced into the exhaust stream to help burn unburned mixture after burning.
Two tubes were hooked up to those ports which lead to an air pump that way driven off the pulley. Removing the air pump is a good ideal because it’s overly complicated and not very effective. Some people rebuild their engine using these heads and have no idea why there is soot in the engine compartment or why it’s so noisy. The holes have to be plugged up after the pump is removed.
Two tubes are screwed into the holes and they are difficult to remove sometimes without stripping the threads. After removing the tubes you need to plug the holes and the best way to do it is with a 10×1 valve adjusting screw and some Loctite

What I’m trying to accomplish is build a Jeep that is relatively tough but I don’t need to do hardcore wheeling. I’ve been there and done the “drive it like you stole it” thing in Trucks, cars and boats. After many years of bleeding money I’ve calmed down a bit. Yes, I will off road it but if there’s a chance of breaking a suspension piece, smashing the body or making mine ache more than it does already, I’ll slow down or go back.
Mainly this Jeep will be a daily driver in the summer and most of the off road it will see is on the sand. Oh yes and my wife will likely drive it more than me.

Verified Purchase Awesome tach! I installed this in a motorhome where the engine’s red line is only RPM. Most tachs out there go to so there would be RPM on the scale that would never see the needle!
In the world of drag racing, LS engines have been making a big splash sense they first showed up in the burnout boxes in They offer a great platform to build engines whether you are running 8s, or 12s. We decided to come up with the basics on what it takes to swap an LS engine into an older vehicle not originally designed to accept it.
We have a Plymouth Valiant that we want to use in double duty on the street as a cruiser, and at the track as a bruiser. There is a lot at stake here—namely a hp low-deck Chrysler big-block stuffed with a lot of high-quality parts. The only real thing to decide with an Auto Meter tachometer is what features you want, what size you need, and what cosmetics you like. It also comes with basic mounting hardware to strap it to your steering column, dashpad, or instrument panel.
Models are also available for in-dash mounting without the cup or base. A small inspection hole in the rear allows the user to select a series of DIP switches for four-, six-, or eight-cylinder operation. Ours came set for 8-cylinder from the factory. You must remember to hook up the white dash light wire for this to operate. Auto Meter also includes a small selection of colored filters that slip over the small serviceable bulb inside the gauge; these allow you to change the color of the light to match your needs.
Moreover, Auto Meter tach faces are available in a variety of materials, colors, fonts, and rpm ranges. You can also get an add-on or built-in adjustable shift-lite, peak recall, playback, and even data-logging—essentially anything you want.

L07 – Lotus Yellow Condition: The car was not going and had suffered an engine fire with most of the rear bonnet burned and also some damage to the rear of the roof and rear window area. I restored it in the next few months and registered the vehicle with the registration No. The car was used as my main transport around town and for country trips etc. I was also involved in competition car rallying in 4 cylinder Fords at that time. Although I was impressed by the balance and handling of the standard Europa it was really not fast enough to get the adrenaline going so I spent some time thinking about how to get the car to accelerate faster and also improve its top speed.
Fortunately the need never eventuated unlike some others. I decided in the end to re-power the vehicle with a 13B Mazda Rotary engine No. A which I obtained from a damaged RX4 vehicle. To my knowledge this was the first time this conversion had ever been attempted and I had to design and build everything to do the job from scratch. The vehicle then went back on the road as my normal road car and I continued to use it for many years.
I spent some time improving the sound insulation and ultimately it became a very potent but comfortable road car capable of getting from A to B as quickly as anything else could in those days on public roads. I remember having plenty of throttle left at MPH k.
