Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications. The cable came with the adjusting barrel. To replace the cable assembly, you would unbolt the adjusting barrel from the caliper. These cables can often be revived by dripping oil into them and working them back and forth.

This is a noncommercial, just-for-fun, hobbyist site. The primary purpose of this site is to gather and disseminate information about early lugged, steel-framed road bikes made by the Trek Bicycle Corporation , Waterloo, Wisconsin. In response to popular demand, the site has expanded to include not-so-vintage Trek bikes of all kinds as new as Mountain bikers, and carbon and aluminum aficionados do not despair – the brochure extracts on the site contain a list of specs for all of the bikes Trek produced in that year.

Additionally, the table of Trek models by year includes all Trek bikes through Additionally, specifications and pictures for and newer Treks are available on the Trekbikes.

When a modern company sets out to build a bicycle, what they really build is the frame (if that.) They buy sets of tubing from a tubing company, cut and weld them together into a frame, paint it and install parts which they buy different specialized parts companies.

The company history began more than one hundred years before then, in a time and in a Europe that would be wholly alien to those of us brought up over the recent generations. To be concise, the origin was some decades before then in when Josef Werndl b. He improved manufacturing techniques and diversified their offerings. They would continue the manufacturing but also develop the Werndl-rifle Model , a new modern breech loading rifle system.

Working with talented engineers including Ferdinand Mannlicher the company became the leading European producer of small arms. The company began producing bicycles in , and “Steyr” brand automobiles in

Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci.

7 years! Hold on because it’s about to get really mushy. Somehow in 7 short years Blevins Bicycle Company has grown from a small repair shop in the back yard to the huge bike shop it is today.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.

On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps.

WELCOME TO THE BICYCLE MUSEUM. Bicycles are wonderfully simple, eloquent and efficient machines. A few of the bikes were purchased by me, or for me, new, including the brown Schwinn SuperSport, the Trek , the Univega FS, and the Trek (for one of my sons).

Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early, but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest claim is that the bicycle was first made by the hand of Chinese inventor Lu Ban [1]. Another later report, in the form of a sketch, comes from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus.

Drais invented his Laufmaschine German for “running machine” in , that was called Draisine English or draisienne French by the press. Karl von Drais patented this design in , which was the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine, commonly called a velocipede , and nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse.

Hans-Erhard Lessing Drais’ biographer found from circumstantial evidence that Drais’ interest in finding an alternative to the horse was the starvation and death of horses caused by crop failure in , the Year Without a Summer following the volcanic eruption of Tambora in This design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America.

Its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to increasing numbers of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use. However, in Paris a Chinese visitor named Bin Chun could still observe foot-pushed velocipedes. The concept was picked up by a number of British cartwrights; the most notable was Denis Johnson of London announcing in late that he would sell an improved model. During the summer of , the “hobby-horse”, thanks in part to Johnson’s marketing skills and better patent protection, became the craze and fashion in London society.

The History of the Folding Bike

History[ edit ] The spoked wheel was invented to allow the construction of lighter and swifter vehicles. The earliest known examples are in the context of the Sintashta culture , dating to ca. Soon after this, horse cultures of the Caucasus region used horse-drawn spoked-wheel war chariots for the greater part of three centuries. They moved deep into the Greek peninsula where they joined with the existing Mediterranean peoples to give rise, eventually, to classical Greece after the breaking of Minoan dominance and consolidations led by pre-classical Sparta and Athens.

A bicycle frame is the main component of a bicycle, onto which wheels and other components are fitted. The modern and most common frame design for an upright bicycle is based on the safety bicycle, and consists of two triangles: a main triangle and a paired rear triangle.

The first known traffic signal appeared in London in near the Houses of Parliament. Designed by JP Knight, it featured two semaphore arms and two gas lamps. The earliest electric traffic lights include Lester Wire’s two-color version set up in Salt Lake City circa , James Hoge’s system US patent 1, , installed in Cleveland by the American Traffic Signal Company in , and William Potts’ 4-way red-yellow-green lights introduced in Detroit beginning in New York City traffic towers began flashing three-color signals also in Garrett Morgan’s cross-shaped, crank-operated semaphore was not among the first half-hundred patented traffic signals, nor was it “automatic” as is sometimes claimed, nor did it play any part in the evolution of the modern traffic light.

Gas Mask Garrett Morgan in ? The invention of the gas mask predates Morgan’s breathing device by several decades. Early versions were constructed by the Scottish chemist John Stenhouse in and the physicist John Tyndall in the s, among many other inventors prior to World War I.

Opinions and value judgments are our own, unless otherwise noted — Sheldon d. Additions and corrections are most welcome. Sachs also made multi-speed internal-gear hubs in 3-, 5-, 7- and speed versions. Their “3 x 7” hub was a hybrid system, a 3-speed internal hub that took a 7-sprocket cassette, providing 21 speeds with only one chainwheel. Sachs formerly also made kick-back hubs and a “2 x 6” hybrid hub, the “Orbit”.

The one clear area of domination for Sachs was its chains, which were generally acknowledged to be the finest available. Sachs was the major European competitor to Shimano for the general bicycle parts market. Their parts in general were quite good, and stand up well in comparison with Shimano equivalents, although exchange rate problems sometimes make them less affordable.

Share shares Four years ago the initial concept was created in the Netherlands, now the Utrecht-based firm is distributing the bikes to several countries, including the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. It uses a motor to assist the treadmill, so using the bikes takes little effort. Sensors register the turning treadmill and kick the motor into gear to assist.

The bikes can travel 30 to 50 miles on a charge and gears enable the user to change the pace. It can achieve speeds between 4—17 mph 6—27 kph.

Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.

First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus.

However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle. There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle. The first of these was probably the “Celerifere” developed by a French count named Mede de Sivrac in It consisted of two wheels connected by a beam and was decorated to look like a horse or a lion.

There was no steering mechanism or pedals and it was basically a whimsical novelty meant to entertain the idle rich. The Draisienne below had steering but still no pedals.
